More photographs of this rare example of a Red Captain's Coat from Bromley and Bickley Golf Club (1892-WW2 and now defunct)
Date: Late Victorian c.1895-1901
Dimensions: The overall length from the collar to the end of tails is 40" (102 cm)
Condition: Very good for age, with a few areas of slight damage from moths evident. Some small stain marks here and there but these are due to age and prior use. All ten brass buttons are present, and they are each individually impressed with the Bromley and Bickley Golf Club insignia of a prancing horse.
Details: There is reference to golf being played at Bromley in 1891, but it wasn't until the following year that the Bromley and Bickley Golf Club was offically formed. The course was situated on Bromley common, and used the site of an old racecourse for the links. Initially there were only forty members, but with the growing popularity of the game at that time, the membership soon grew and had to be limited to a total of 250 members.
A number of proficient golfers held the post of Professional over the early years of the club, including;
A. Nash 1893-1894 and H. Cavell 1894-1896
David Dyson Anderson 1901-1907 (son of James 'Jamie' Anderson the three times Open Champion)
Frank G. Renouf 1907-1909 (A Jerseyman and younger brother of Thomas G. Renouf who was Professional at Manchester G.C. for 23 years)
The Bromley and Bickley Golf Club went into liquidation in 1939, and after the Second World War part of the original course was developed for a sports an recreation ground, along with housing.
A nine-hole public course owned by London Borough Council and founded in 1948 occupies part of the old course, and is all that remains of the original links.
