Born in Leith in 1857, Bernard Sayers will ever be associated with the East Lothian town of North Berwick where he set up his club making business. He finished in a three-way tie for the Open Championship in 1888, but hand to settle for second place when it was found that Jack Burn's was incorrectly calculated. Although this was the closest 'Ben' came to winning the title, he did manage to play in every Open from 1880 to 1923 - creating a record of his own.
