Club: Round back Cleek. Retailed by Elvery & Co., London, Dublin & Cork.
Maker: William Gibson & Company, Kinghorn, Fife, Scotland.
Year: c.1910-1920
Shaft: Reasonably straight hickory shaft with slight bow at grip end, firmly fitted to hosel. No splits or cracks visible. Vintage red 13" suede grip.
Length: 38.25"
Loft: 18 degrees Swing weight: C0-C1
Condition: Very good. Clear makers' stamps with nice deep dashed face markings.
Other details: James Braid 'Autograph' model with round shaped back, deploying more weight behind the centre of the blade. Braid was a five times Open Championship winner (and Professional at Walton Heath Golf Club 1904-50), whose endorsment and name stamped on any club of the day guaranteed a marketing success. The retailers stamp of Elvery & Co., London, Dublin & Cork clearly marked on the reverse. Elvery & Co. were founded in 1847, and were Ireland's oldest sports retailer. Their first store was opened in Dublin, but with the success of the business, further stores were opened in London and Cork in the later part of the 19th century.
