Club:  A 'Gold Medal' Model Spoon c.1920

Condition: Very good for age, having had some light restoration with new replacement whipping to neck and grip.  Hickory shaft is straight and has no visible cracks or splits. The brass sole plate shows little sign of use and is firmly fitted to the head. The vintage full leather grip has been refitted with new whipping replacing the old.

Robert Forgan was the nephew of Hugh Philp (regarded by many as the finest long-nose clubmaker), and took over his uncles clubmaking business in 1856. He succeeded in building a thriving company, with a skilled staff of 50 by 1895. His high standard of workmanship resulted in his appointment as clubmaker to the Prince of Wales in 1863, and thereafter the Prince of Wales' crest (plumes) was stamped on all his clubs, later to be stamped with a Crown after the Prince's coronation in 1901.
