John Wisden & Co. was one of London's foremost sports retailers of the 19th and early 20th century. Opening a retail premises just off Leicester Square in 1855 John Wisden went into partnership with Fred Lillywhite selling cricket equipment and cigars. However, the partnership was disolved in 1859 with John continuing on his own. By 1872 the business had moved the short distance to 21 Cranbourn St., and Wisden began manufacturing and retailing other sporting goods, including supplying golf clubs in around 1874. At the height of the golfing boom in the 1890s the company were selling the latest patented designs and golf clubs from all the leading manufacturers of the day. Before the business began manufacturing their own models, golf clubs sold through  them would be stamped below the grip with the 'JOHN WISDEN & Co. LONDON' mark.
