F. Hadwin Hyde Golf Club, Godley, Greater Manchester (1906-1909). A.G. Spalding & Brothers Patent Spring Face Cleek

- Description
Club: Patent Spring Face Cleek.
Covered under the same patent as the Cran Cleek (which had a block of wood inset into a cavity in the face), the Spalding Spring Face iron had a thin sheet of steel covering a void in the head.
Maker: A.G. Spalding & Brothers, made for F. Hadwin, professional at Hyde Golf Club, Godley, Greater Manchester (1906-1909)
Year: c.1907
Shaft: Original shaft with original thin suede skin grip over underlisting. Shaft, straight with no visible signs of cracks or splits and firmly fitted to the head. Grip missing a section at the butt end but generally in reasonable condition for a 120 year old club.
Length: 39"
Condition: Reasonable condition for age. Head slightly pitted on hosel and back of head, but face nicely preserved. Oval stamp on reverse worn but readable as "F. Hadwin, Maker, Hyde".
Other details: An early Spring face cleek with short, through-hosel in the style of Carruthers irons. F. Hadwin was the professional to Hyde Golf Club, Greater Manchester, which was a nine hole course founded in 1892 and closed in 1954. Hadwin was professional there from 1906 to 1909 which allows us to narrowly date this iron to somewhere between those dates.
