J. Herriot, Glasgow, Brass Putter , made for A.J. Hobley Minehead & West Somerset Golf Club c.1896

- Description
Club: Heavy Brass blade Putter
Maker: J. Herriot, Glasgow, Scotland. He was a small scale 19th century maker of irons, and therefore examples of his clubs are quite scarce.
Putter was made for A.J. Hobley, one of the early professionals at the Minehead and West Somerset Golf Club which was formed in1882. Hobley was only at the club for a short period, from 1895 to 1896, and this allows us to date the putter very accurately. Hobley left the Minehead golf club to take the professional's job at Cheltenham, where he stayed for the next 36 years.
Year: c.1896
Shaft: Original, straight shaft, stamped "A.J. HOBLEY, MINEHEAD" , and with vintage 11" grip. The shaft is not made from the usual hickory wood, but an exotic timber such as "Danga" wood or similar.
Length: 35”
Condition: Very good for a 130 year old club, with some knocks an dents commensurate with age and use. The putter has been lightly restored, with the grip refitted, and the head glued and pinned as it was loose. The putter can now be used if so required.
Other details: A smooth faced heavy brass blade putter with very flat/square crease where the thick top-line of the blade joins the hosel. Hosel 3.5". Clear maker's stamp for "J. Herriot, Glasgow" in the centre of the blade.
