John Thomas Young Gilroy (1898-1985)

Framed Original Pen and Watercolour artwork

Frame size: 49cm x 40cm

Image size: 31cm x 21.5cm

Gilroy was an English artist and illustrator, best known for his extensive advertising work for Guiness, the Irish Stout brewery company.

He trained at the Royal College of Art in London, and remained there as a teacher after completing his studies.

In 1925 he started working for the London advertising agency, S.H.Bensons, where he created the iconic promotional artwork for Guiness. Many of the advertisements/posters featured zoo animals and birds, the Toucan probably being the best known of these.
