- Description
A late Victorian/early Edwardian 'Sunday Club' walking stick with an iron 'mashie' shaped head.
It derives its name from a time when golf played on the Sabbath (a Sunday), was either banned, or very much frowned upon. Golfers who played on the Sunday were hence referred to as ‘Sabbath Breakers’.
To bypass this strict convention, a keen golfer could make sure he took his walking stick on a Sunday stroll across the golf course. When he passed a green, out of sight of the clubhouse, he could then slip a golf ball out of his pocket, and using his upturned walking stick, get some extra practice in!
Condition:
Good condition for age. Straight, finely tapered close grain hardwood shaft which is firmly fitted to the iron head.
The iron head is a scaled copy of a smooth-face mashie, as was used by golfers in the latter part of the 19th century.
The tip of the walking stick is protected by a finely tapered 3/4" (2cm) brass ferrule.
Dimensions:
Overall length 36.5" (93 cm)
Iron head dimensions: Length 2.5" (6.5cm) Face depth 1.375" (3.5cm) Sole width 1/2" (1.2cm)
